What Is HCPCS Level II?

HCPCS Level II stands for Health Care Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II. It is the standard code used by medical billers and coders to represent services that fall outside of HCPCS Level I codes.

Sometimes referred to as the “hall closet of coding,” HCPCS Level II codes serve a number of needs. The HCPCS Level II is comprised of 5-character alpha-numeric codes that can represent:

  • Medical supplies
  • Durable medical goods
  • Non-physician services
  • Services not represented in HCPCS Level I

Examples Of HCPCS Level II Services

HCPCS Level II includes services such as:

  • Ambulance
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Prosthetics
  • Orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS)

HCPCS Level II can also be used as an official code for outpatient hospital care, chemotherapy drugs and Medicaid.

The development and use of HCPCS Level II began in the 1980s and is widely used today.
