Medical Billers and Coders play an important role in hospitals and insurance companies by providing the information needed for handling patient records and billing on a daily basis.

Medical Coders assign medical codes and sort, file, and maintain patient records. Using the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), a standardized coding system that is used to bill Medicare providers. Medical coders assign standardized 5-character alphanumeric codes to health care services and procedures to insurance companies for reimbursement. These codes are known as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes.

Medical Billers handle all aspects of medical insurance claims and patient bills. Medical billing is a sub-specialty of medical coding involved specifically with billing. Medical billers use the same Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes as medical coders. Medical Billers submit and track insurance claims, communicate with insurance companies, and ensure that insurance companies pay medical providers in a timely manner.
