What Is Medical Billing?

Medical billing is a sub-specialty of medical coding. Medical billers ensure the prompt and accurate billing of medical insurance claims.

The responsibilities of a medical biller can vary depending on the workplace, but their main job is to assemble all of the information concerning patient medical bills. This can include making sure all insurance forms are completed and signed, and that all of the necessary information is documented in the computer.

Medical billers communicate on a regular basis with physicians and other health care professionals to explain diagnoses and obtain information. For this reason, medical billers must have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology and code. They must understand:

• Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
• Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System HCPCS Level 1/ HCPCS Level II
• ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM  codes

What Do Medical Billers Do?

The responsibilities of a medical biller can include:

• Preparing invoices
• Contacting patients
• Collecting payments
• Making adjustments
• Interpreting Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)
• Handling denied claims
• Processing appeals
