Become A Certified Medical Biller & Coder

While not all companies require certification, it is highly recommended. Medical Billing and Coding certification indicates that you have met certain standards of knowledge required to perform your job. Certification may also help to distinguish you as an experienced or formally trained medical biller or coder, which could lead to a higher salary or more employment opportunities.

There are various associations in which you could obtain certification through, such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the Association of Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

To qualify, you must be:

1. A high school graduate or equivalent, and
2. A graduate of an approved program of study in Insurance and Coding or a working biller/coder with at least one year of qualifying, verifiable experience

Ask your program officials. If not, have them call your certifying agency to submit the appropriate documentation for consideration.

Is Certification Important?

Yes, especially to your employer.
